Within Asmara, shared minibuses and local taxis cover the city at budget-friendly rates, hail taxis from the street rather than relying on any app, as ride-hailing platforms are not established here. For longer journeys to towns like Massawa on the Red Sea coast, intercity buses and shared long-distance taxis are the practical options, though road conditions outside major routes can be rough and journey times often run longer than maps suggest. From Asmara International Airport, the terminal sits close to the city center, a short taxi ride rather than the long transfers common at other African capitals. Negotiate your fare before boarding. There are no metered taxis. A permit system governs tourist movement outside Asmara and certain designated areas, so check current requirements with Eritrean authorities before planning any regional travel, this is not a bureaucratic formality but a genuine constraint that affects itineraries.
